7 Excellent World War II Movies
When considering to stay home for an evening and watch a World War II movie on direct tv, most men would probably regard that as an entertaining way to spend some free time. Their wives and girlfriends, however, may think they can find better things to do with their significant others than watching battle scenes and puffed-up egos all night.
Below is a list of some of the best movies in the genre which may heartily appeal to both genders. Some of them are well known classics that deserve revisiting. Others may be hidden gems to some people, just waiting for discovery.
- Schindler’s List needs little commentary. Experience it again.
- The Bridge on the River Kwai is an oldie but goodie. It won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture in 1957. British POWs imprisoned by the Japanese are ordered to build a bridge. A battle of wills ensues, and both the British and the Japanese colonels show signs of madness. It’s an interesting commentary on war and human nature.
One-Hit Wonders That Totally Hold Up
It’s impossible for an artist to know how a song will perform on the charts, and it’s just as difficult to know which songs will really stick in the public mind years down the road. Landing just one hit is a major accomplishment, but even among one-hit wonders, the number of songs that people are still listening to and talking about is small.
The songs that hold up over time do so by tapping into an urge for nostalgia but also by being, well, pretty good songs. (There’s a reason they were hits, after all.)
1.“Tainted Love,” Soft Cell: Originally recorded by Gloria Jones in 1965, “Tainted Love” got a new lease on life when Soft Cell updated it for the synth generation in 1981. The extended single was a medley with a cover of The Supremes’ “Where Did Our Love Go,” but it was the shortened version that dominated the airwaves and made the U.K. band a hit in the States.

Former NFL’s Steve McNair Found Shot Dead
Former NFL quarterback Steve McNair was shot multiple times, including once in the head, at a Nashville, Tennessee, condominium, authorities said Saturday.
Steve McNair, 36, spent 13 seasons in the NFL, the majority with the Tennessee Titans.
Police said they found McNair and a woman identified as Sahel Kazemi shot to death after receiving a phone call about an injured person.
McNair’s body was found seated on a living room sofa, authorities said.
Kazemi sustained a gunshot wound to the head, authorities said. Police also said a pistol was found near her body.

Harry Potter is Back with another Block Buster
Boy wizard Harry Potter is back in cinemas later this month with the sixth installment of the movie franchise, and another box office bonanza looks assured for the Warner Bros. studio.
“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” hits screens on July 15, promising high-speed action, dark and dangerous battles with the forces of evil, budding romance at Hogwarts school for wizards and the expected death of a prominent character.
But while Harry Potter waves his magic wand over and over, he just can’t enchant Oscar voters. Indeed, Harry Potter is fast becoming the Susan Lucci of the Oscars. Since 2001, his five films have netted just six nods and no wins.
The wait has been a long one for Potter fans around the world who have followed the fate of Harry and his friends through the seven best-selling books by British author J.K. Rowling.
