You are unlikely to hit a home run with success if you do not put your heart and soul into it. Like the will of the Gods, the vagaries of success punctuate every profession. And Hollywood or acting is no different. One minute a new face is launched and riding on the swift wings of success that face becomes a household name, a celebrity.

Conversely, one bad movie or PR spurn and that celeb comes crashing back to reality. Such is the life of a celebrity. While there are adulation and accolades, there is also stiff competition in a dog-eats-dog world. Some are fortunate enough to survive, some not so much.

Over the years we have seen many actors’ career take-off and also shot down. Sometimes the decision to lose the limelight is purely personal and sometimes it’s professional.

Here is our list of the 10 celebrities who have lost the limelight, either as a personal choice or simply because Hollywood was a hard task master:

  1. Macauley Culkin – Probably best remembered as THE yesteryear child star, who was instantly catapulted to the seventh heaven of stardom, Macauley Culkin did not win any favorswith mistress Hollywood in the long run. Known for his famous movies like the Home Alone franchise, My Girl, The Good Son, Richie Rich and his infamous friendship with pop legend Michael Jackson, the 37 year old has dappled in movies, music and writing. A string of legal issues later, Culkin is now only a shadow of his former self.

  2. Mara Wilson – Matilda of Matilda fame probably did not have as prolific a career as a child actor like Macauley Culkin. However, she too dropped off the face of Hollywood planet in the year 2000 after appearing in the movie, Thomas and the Magic Railroad. The former child star, now 30, has since focused on writing.

  3. Amanda Bynes –What a Girl Wants, Easy A, She’s the Man and Hairspray actress, Amanda Bynes’ example can easily be quoted to illustrate how a celebrity can easily lose what he/she has safely garnered over the years. The 31 year old former actress’ struggles came to the limelight in 2012 when she was charged with DUI in West Hollywood. Though the charge was dropped two years hence, it was hardly the end of her woes. In 2013 Bynes was detained and hospitalized under mental health evaluation hold when she started a fire in the driveway of a stranger. The actress has since risen from the ashes of her former self having enrolled herself at Irvine’s Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in December 2013.

  4. Rick Moranis –The geeky and goofy fellow of Ghostbusters, The Flintstones and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Rick Moranis fell off the Hollywood bandwagon long ago. 1997 saw the demise of his wife and on the heels of the unfortunate event, Moranis was quick to decide that he wanted to bid adieu to acting to raise his children.

  5. Neve Campbell – Scream and Wild Things alum, Neve Campbell was a sought after actress riding high on the success of her films. But that was the 90s. The 44 year old Canadian actress though having been part of successful indie ventures is now more of a television face, having appeared in the likes of Grey’s Anatomy, Mad Men and House of Cards. But we are not complaining.

  6. Brendan Fraser –The literally dashing part soldier/part knight-in-shining-armor/part archaeologist of The Mummy franchise fame, Brendan Fraser or the most loved Tarzan in his turn as George of the Jungle has seemed to incur the wrath of the Hollywood gods, if his recent filmography is anything to go by. Add to that personal woes like a mud-slinging divorce and you have a concoction where the by-product is a film such a Furry Vengeance.

  7. Meg Ryan – The darling of Hollywood rom-coms, Meg Ryan used to be the quintessential girl-next-door that women all over would identify with and men would haplessly fall for. It is only sad to see a star like Meg fade away to oblivion whose filmography boasts of When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail, French Kiss and more. However, it’s heartening to know that the Kate and Leopold actress stepped in the director’s shoes in 2016 with her venture, Ithaca.

  8. Val Kilmer – The youngest actor to be accepted into the prestigious acting program of Julliard, Val Kilmer did what most actors do when they let success go to their heads – they just lose the focus of it all. Rumours of an altercation with Tom Cruise on the sets of Top Gun only cemented his perception of being a difficult actor in the industry. The Doors and Willow actor slowly became notorious for his temper tantrums and the rest, as they say, is history.

  9. Josh Hartnett –The Black Dahlia, O, Black Hawk Down and Pearl Harbor actor Josh Hartnett‘s case is probably a singular example to show that you can only go on for so long resting on the laurels of your chiselled features. No, we are not saying that he’s a bad actor but he did not ride high on the success of all those of “Hottest Guy” lists far too long.

    1. Alicia Silverstone –If only Clueless had given us any clue as to how short lived Alicia Silverstone’s Hollywood career would be. The former teen idol, who redefined crazy in The Crush, the 41 year old actor now dishes on working on TV and has been part of some amazing projects like Catfight. At other times, she chooses to focus on her activism interests and has also published two books on nutrition.

It is often said that success and hard work go hand-in-hand, but it’s also true that Hollywood is a fair weather friend. One day you are the apple of everyone’s eyes with fans, producers and directors ready to kiss the ground you tread on, and the very next day you are just another face that used to be up on that billboard. Though Hollywood has given us greats in the past and will continue to do so, some greats fade away simply because fate has other plans for them.
