The BET or the Black Entertainment Television Network awards happened with a lot of fan fare in L.A., California at the Nokia Theatre on 29th of June, 2014 . Actors, actresses, singers as well as athletes alike were felicitated and appreciated for their performances and body of work over the past year. The all star comedian with all bones funny, Chris Rock did a super job as the MC or host for the evening. The show kicked off sharp at eight in the evening local time and ended just little before midnight.
Pharrell Williams had crowds going with his show opening number, come get it Bae. Audiences had more to cheer there as Missy Eliot joined him for the performance. Amongst the largely successful nominees was August Alsina – Best New Artist and Viewers choice award, and Hype Williams – Video Director of the year.
Nicky Minaj also gave a great performance with one of her more significantly commended songs Pills and potion. Her insinuation on her writing her own lyrics as opposed to Iggy Azalea got mixed reactions. A very moving tribute performance was given by Phylicia Rashad for Maya Angelou and Ruby Dee who passed away recently.
Chris Rock was at his comic best notably for his well insinuated funny jibes Donald Sterling, Oprah Winfrey among others. Some which were notable were weight jibes at Rick Ross and as such at Jay Z and Solang Knowles. Notable wins for the night were Beyonce going away with the best female R&B /Pop artist award with Pharell Williams taking away the same for Male. Nicky Minaj won the best female hip hop artist (she won it last year too), Lupita Nyong’ofor best actress, Chiwetel Ejiofor, for best actor and 12 Years a slave best movie.
While Robin Thicke went all out in an attempt to appease his estranged wife, Paula Patton back with the ballad Forever love, the couple Jay Z and Beyonce closed the show with a scintillating performance of the song, Partition from the On the run tour with Beyonce.
All the happy occurrences at the show had a rather dark lacing in the form of reports a death and injuries to five others due to violence at two BET awards related parties over the weekend. However, officials quickly labelled these events as unaffiliated and unauthorised. The show was not completely devoid of Controversy as the host’s (Chris Rock) rather scathing introduction for Chris Brown before his surprise performance did not leave him in splits.
While he did scowl at the comment about an apparent recent tryst with the authorities, his performances were to stellar and sans any negativity due to it. The night could not have been complete without Lionel Ritchie getting the Lifetime Achievement and Chris rock doing a one up on Ellen Degeneres (who gave away pizza at the Oscars earlier this year) by giving away Chicken and waffles.
