Friday Night’s “Hope for Haiti Now” telethon got together one of the world’s biggest stars at the initiative of George Clooney and it was not in vain: more than 58 million dollars were raised, not counting the donations from corporations or private sponsors.
The record-breaking sum is to get bigger and bigger every day, since the “Hope for Haiti Now” album which contains performances from stars like Alicia Keys, Coldplay, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Shakira, John Legend, Mary J. Blige, Taylor Swift, Christina Aguilera, Sting, Beyonce, Sheryl Crow, Kid Rock, Keith Urban, Madonna, Justin Timberlake, Jennifer Hudson, Emeline Michel, Jay-Z, Bono, the Edge, Rihanna, Dave Matthews, Neil Young and Wyclef Jean and has become a number one on iTunes in no less than eighteen countries in the same day (Saturday).
The artists have also participated in creating a video to promote the campaign and raise the chances of survival for the Haitian community. All the funds coming from the selling of the album will be collected by the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, Oxfam America, Partners in Health, Red Cross, UNICEF, United Nations World Food Program and Yele Haiti Foundation.
The highly destructive 7.0 magnitude earthquake that shook Haiti on the 12th of January left behind over 100,000 deaths and an extensive damage of the buildings and roads.
