Remember Fiona Apple? If you were anywhere near a radio in the late 90s you most definitely heard all of her hits. “Criminal”, “Shadow Boxer” and “Sleep to Dream” were her three biggest hits from 1997 to 1998. Fiona was awarded the Best New Artist award at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards.
Apple is also known for her Best New Artist speech which she mumbled out something resembling the words ‘This world isn’t bullshit and you shouldn’t model your life on what you think we think is cool and what we are wearing and what we are saying’.
Fiona was a symbol of teen angst but more so of feminine angst. She was actually quite shocking and forward-thinking for her age and day. Artists who have somewhat followed in her footsteps should thank her for setting the pace.
Apple has been working on a second album titled “When the Pawn Hits the Conflict He Thinks like a King What He Knows Throws the Blows When he Goes to the Fight and He’ll Win the Whole Thing Fore He Enters the Ring There’s No Body to Batter When Your Mind Is Your Might So When You Go Solo, You Hold Your Own Hand and Remember That Depth Is the Greatest of Heights and If You Know Where You Stand, Then You’ll Know Where to Land and If You Fall It Won’t Matter, Cuz You Know That You’re Right.’
