Frank McCourtFrank McCourt, best known author for ‘Angela’s Ashes’ author, Former Public School teacher and beloved raconteur, died at 78 in Manhattan on Sunday of metastatic melanoma. He had contracted meningitis after battling with skin cancer and the condition had gradually worsened over last two days.

Initially he responded well to cancer treatment, but two weeks ago he was diagnosed with meningitis as well, which is a complication that usually occurs one in 25 melanoma sufferers.

Mr. McCourt, who taught in the city’s school system for nearly 30 years, had always told his writing students that they were their own best material.
